Smith & Wesson 1911PD

This project involved a multi-stage cosmetic enhancement of a Smith & Wesson 1911PD pistol, combining precision laser engraving with professional Cerakote application and final in-house finishing.

Initial work focused on surface preparation and conditioning, ensuring all engraved areas were properly cleaned, stabilized, and prepared to receive consistent laser energy. Care was taken to preserve critical tolerances, factory markings, and functional surfaces throughout the process.

Custom laser engraving was then performed using a fiber laser system with carefully controlled power, speed, and depth parameters. The engraving strategy emphasized clean line definition, balanced depth, and visual flow while avoiding excessive material removal or thermal distortion.

Following engraving, the pistol was sent to Praetorian Armory & Coatings for professional Cerakote application. The Cerakote finish was applied as part of the overall design intent, providing both visual contrast and durable surface protection while interacting intentionally with the engraved geometry.

As a final refinement step, the slide was returned to Woodland Trading LLC and secured in a custom in-house fabricated jig. Using controlled mechanical surface conditioning, Cerakote was selectively removed from the tops of the engraved features while leaving material intact in the recessed areas. This process revealed the underlying metal on the high points of the engraving, creating a layered, dimensional effect that enhances contrast, depth, and legibility without compromising the protective coating in the surrounding surfaces.

The completed project reflects a deliberate, multi-discipline workflow—engraving, surface conditioning, professional coating, and precision post-finish refinement—executed in coordination to achieve a refined and cohesive result.

I finished the pistol with a set of grip panels I created out of Ostrich Foot leather bonded to cherry wood panels. The cherry wood was fitted, dyed, and polished to finish the presentation and match the exotic leather's red finish.

Note: All work performed by Woodland Trading LLC is cosmetic in nature. No functional modifications or gunsmithing services are provided.
